Jenny thank you for your comment. The VA happens to be an excellent case study in what works about health care. It is not about whether it is a for profit or non profit, it is about what the vision for the organization is and how it is manifested to bring value.

I think your advice is accurate. I think that it is unfortunate that so many of the people showing up as managers in the healthcare field are here because they were unsucessful in managing the US auto industry and the US technical support industry, and needed to find a new industry. Health care really shouldn't be about profit in my opinion. We will not as a society fail to take care of the health needs of people just because they don't have money. The amount of advertising we see today for various medications represents an awful lot of the money that used to go into patient care and medication assistance for those without other resources. I think a lot of people in medicine (and unfortunately this is now also happening in public health) are being lured into these business models where it is not the practitioners but the people with the business degrees (who have taken no ethical oath) are willing to crawl over people giving and receiving care both in order to make another couple dollars. There is something inherently wrong with this. Isn't it interesting that the best care in study after study comes from the Veteran's Administration which is not run for profit?
